How to Select the Right Pallet Rack
1. Frame Capacity:
Calculate the total weight of all pallets stored in each bay. Do not include pallets stored on the floor in this calculation.
2. Height Requirements:
Measure the full vertical space, including:
-
Height of the pallet
-
Height of the pallet load
-
Beam height
-
Add 4" of clearance between the top of the load and the beam above
Ensure the top beam is placed at least 6" below the maximum lift height of your forklift.
3. Rack Depth:
Your pallet should overhang the rack frame by 3" in both the front and back.
For example: a 48" deep pallet should pair with a 42" deep rack frame.
To find the right frame depth, subtract 6" from your pallet depth.
(Ensure all pallets are in good condition.)
4. Beam Width:
Start by measuring the width of your pallet. Then, add:
-
A minimum of 3" clearance between pallet and frame
-
4" between adjacent pallets
This total determines your correct beam length.
Each pair of beams must be able to support the full load per level.
5. Starter Unit Width:
Once beam length is calculated, add 6" to get the overall width of your starter unit.
