How to Select the Right Pallet Rack – A Step-by-Step Guide from Material Flow

Choosing the right pallet rack system is critical for safety, storage efficiency, and smooth warehouse operations. Follow these four simple steps to select the correct setup for your facility:

1. Frame Capacity

Calculate the total weight of all pallets stored in each bay (excluding any pallets placed on the floor). This determines the necessary frame strength to support your load safely.

2. Height Requirements

Measure the full vertical space you’ll need:

  • Height of pallet + height of the pallet load

  • Add beam height

  • Add 4" clearance between the top of the load and the beam above

  • Ensure the top beam is 6" lower than your forklift’s maximum lifting height

3. Depth of Frame

To support proper overhang and clearance:

  • Use a frame depth 6" less than your pallet depth
(For example, for 48" pallets, use 42" deep frames)

  • Allow 3" overhang in the front and back

  • Ensure pallets are in good condition for safe stacking

4. Beam Width

Determine the correct beam length by measuring:

  • The width of each pallet

  • Add 3" clearance between pallet and frame

  • Add 4" clearance between adjacent pallets
Each pair of beams must support the total weight per level. Add-on sections need one extra frame and the necessary number of beam pairs.
