How to Select Your Pallet Rack

1. Determine Frame Capacity

Add up the total weight of all pallets stored per bay—do not include pallets resting directly on the floor. This total weight will determine the required capacity of your upright frames.

2. Calculate Height Requirements

Measure from the floor to the top of your tallest pallet load. Be sure to include:

  • The pallet height

  • The height of the load on the pallet

  • The beam height

Add at least 4" of clearance between the top of the load and the bottom of the beam above. Ensure your top beam is positioned at least 6" below the maximum lift height of your forklift for safe operation.

3. Select the Correct Frame Depth

For optimal support and stability, your pallet should overhang the frame by 3" at both the front and back.

Example: For a standard 48" deep pallet, choose a 42" deep frame.

Make sure your pallets are in good condition and consistent in size to maintain safe overhang.

4. Determine Beam Width

Start by measuring the width of your pallet. Then add:

  • 3" clearance between the pallet and each side frame (total of 6")

  • 4" clearance between adjacent pallets

This ensures safe loading and unloading. Each pair of beams must support the total pallet weight per level. When expanding with an add-on bay, you’ll only need one additional frame and the necessary number of beams.
