How to Choose the Right Pallet Rack
1. Determine Frame Capacity
Calculate the total weight of all pallets stored above the floor level in each bay. Only include pallets supported by the racking system itself—do not count pallets resting on the floor.
2. Calculate Required Height
Measure from the floor to the top of the tallest load, including the pallet, the product, and the beam height. Add at least 4 inches of clearance between the top of the load and the beam above. The top beam should sit 6 inches lower than your forklift's maximum lifting height to ensure safe operation.
3. Choose Frame Depth
For proper support, pallets should overhang the rack frame by 3 inches in the front and back. For example, a 48" deep pallet pairs best with a 42" deep frame. Subtract 6" from your pallet depth to determine the correct frame depth. Be sure pallets are in good condition for proper support.
4. Determine Beam Length (Width Between Uprights)
Measure the width of a single pallet, then add:
-
3" of clearance between each pallet and the upright frame
-
4" of clearance between adjacent pallets on the same level
This total will give you the correct beam length. Each pair of beams must support the full weight of all pallets on that level. When adding more bays, only one extra frame is needed along with the required number of beams.
We can design and build racking systems to fit your operation. Custom height or depth frames available.
