How to Select the Right Pallet Rack
1. Frame Capacity
Start by calculating the total weight of all pallets stored in each bay, excluding any pallets placed directly on the floor. This will determine the appropriate frame strength needed.
2. Height Requirements
Measure the entire vertical space for each pallet position, including:
-
The height of the pallet itself
-
The height of the load
-
The height of the beam
Add 4 inches of clearance above the top of the load. For safety, ensure the top beam sits at least 6 inches below your forklift’s maximum lift height.
3. Rack Depth
To ensure proper support and stability:
-
Your pallet should overhang the frame by 3 inches in both the front and back.
-
For example, a 48" deep pallet should pair with a 42" deep frame.
Make sure pallets are structurally sound and in good condition before racking.
4. Beam Width
To calculate the correct beam length:
-
Measure the width of your pallet
-
Add a minimum of 3 inches of clearance between the pallet and the upright frame on each side
-
Add 4 inches between pallets when placing two side-by-side
Each pair of beams must support the combined weight of the pallets per level.
Add-on bays only require one additional upright frame and the correct number of beams to complete the setup.
