✅ How to Select the Right Pallet Rack
Choosing the correct pallet racking system ensures safety, efficiency, and maximum use of warehouse space. Here's what to consider:
1. Determine Frame Capacity
Calculate the total weight of all pallets stored in a single bay (do not include pallets stored on the floor). This helps ensure your frame can safely support the full load.
2. Measure Total Height
Add together the height of:
-
The pallet
-
The pallet load
-
The beam height
Include at least 4" of clearance between the top of the load and the bottom of the beam above it. The top beam should sit at least 6" below your forklift’s maximum lift height to avoid accidental damage during placement.
3. Select Frame Depth
Your pallet should overhang the front and rear of the frame by 3". For example, a 48" deep pallet works best with a 42" deep frame. Subtract 6" from your pallet’s depth to determine the proper frame size. Be sure pallets are in good condition for safe storage.
4. Determine Beam Width
Start with your pallet width, then add:
-
3" of clearance between the pallet and each frame (minimum)
-
4" of clearance between pallets on the same level
This total gives you the ideal beam length. Each pair of beams must support the combined weight of all pallets stored on that level. If you're adding on to an existing rack, you’ll only need one additional upright frame and the appropriate number of beams.
