How to Choose the Right Pallet Rack System

Selecting the correct pallet rack is crucial for safety, efficiency, and maximizing storage. Follow these key steps to make the right choice:

1.  Determine Frame Capacity

Start by calculating the total weight of all pallets stored per bay—excluding any pallets stored directly on the floor. Your frame must support this combined load safely.

2.  Measure Rack Height

To find your total required height:

  • Measure the pallet, load height, and beam height.

  • Add 4 inches of clearance between the top of the pallet load and the beam above it.

  • Ensure the top beam is positioned at least 6 inches lower than your forklift’s maximum lift height for safe operation.

3.  Select Frame Depth

Choose a frame depth that allows your pallet to overhang by 3 inches at both the front and back.
Example: For a 48" deep pallet, use a 42" deep frame.
This setup supports better pallet stability and access. Note: All pallets should be in good, consistent condition.

4.  Calculate Beam Width

  • Measure the width of your pallet.

  • Add at least 3 inches of clearance between the pallet and the upright frame on both sides.

  • Add 4 inches of space between pallets on the same beam level.

The resulting length will give you the correct beam length.
Ensure each beam pair supports the total weight of pallets stored on that level.

Add-on sections only need one extra upright frame and the correct number of beam pairs.
